What is a Geographical Indication (GI) Tag?

A Geographical Indication (GI) tag is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities, reputation, or characteristics unique to that location.

In India, GI tags are governed under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. The GI Registry is located in Chennai.

GI Registration Process in India

  1. Filing of Application
  2. Preliminary Scrutiny and Examination
  3. Publication in GI Journal
  4. Opposition (if any)
  5. Registration and Certification

Only associations, organizations, or authorities representing the interests of producers can apply for GI registration.
