Preserving India's Heritage, Authenticity & Regional Identity
A Geographical Indication (GI) tag is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities, reputation, or characteristics unique to that location.
In India, GI tags are governed under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. The GI Registry is located in Chennai.

Kanchipuram Silk, Pochampally Ikat, Madhubani Paintings.
Coimbatore Wet Grinder, Channapatna Toys.

Only associations, organizations, or authorities representing the interests of producers can apply for GI registration.
GI registration provides legal protection, higher market value, brand recognition, and international acceptance. It empowers artisans and farmers by protecting their traditional knowledge.
India has hundreds of registered GI products across different states. Each GI tag reflects the cultural richness and diversity of India.
States like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Maharashtra have numerous GI-certified products.
